Flooding St George 2012

Hi Guys,

Here are some photos of the flooding in St George this month. Sandy and I are well, we stayed in the town to help out with looking after property of evacuees, catering for the emergency services and doing shifts in the hospital (emergency only, hospital patients evacuated).

This is towards the west of the town where the flood waters started to inundate the homes, you can just see the top of the bridge in the top right of the picture

This family have a lovery home situated on the river bank at the west end of the terrace

These guys also at the west end outside of the levee bank, so they built their own!

This is what saved the rest of the town, a breach of an agracultural levee up stream, the owners of the farm sacraficed thousands of acres of cotton to save the town.

The temporary levee bank in the main part of town holding back the water, the shops etc were just on the otherside of this bank, the floodwaters at this point are 13.95m (new record), if not for that breach on the cotton farm all of this would have been under water.

You can see from this photo, the levee bank coming down the street and then turn right, everthing after that got flooded

Here is one of the local vineyards

And here are the owners have a small drop of the local plonk, so if you receive any wine from us from Riversands winery this is where it came from.

The aftermath

Good old Army to the rescue!!!!!, this is the local Aged Care Home being cleaned up, all the residents were evacuated by Herc' (good old Airforce) ;)

St George is on the road to recovery, the government has agreed to funding a permanent levee bank, and aiding those outside of it to lift their homes onto poles (like the old queensland homes). There are many homes were it will take 6 to 9 months to repair the damage, and some are only just repaired from the last flood.

St George town has had three once in a 100 years flood in the last 24 months!
