Thursday was looking bright and sunny. We had planned to spend the morning at the cattle sale yards. We arrived at the yards full of anticipation as we had been informed at the Information Centre for Roma that this was a worthy pastime for visitors. On Tuesdays they sell cattle which still require fattening up, ‘Store’ cattle, and on Thursdays ‘Prime’ beef is sold. We had opted for the Thursday sales; you can watch the cattle men from large overhead walkways draft out the cattle for different buyers. Roma’s sale yards are reputed to be the largest cattle selling centre in Australia. However today was not the day, all was quiet, was it the bad weather, wrong time of year, who knows, but no one was there.
So plan ‘B’, we headed south for 80km to a small quiet town called Surat. We decided to stay for a coffee and have a bit of a look around. It is a small town with parkland at the back of the main street where you can take a walk alongside the river. There is also a free camp site just outside of the town.
Following coffee and a bit of a sight see we returned back to Roma, deciding to take a look at the Winery next door to the caravan park, Villaroma, which boasts free wine tasting. You can also have a look around, however there was not too much to see. We did however taste the wine (free) coming away with a case (not so free but still a good deal). That afternoon a severe weather warning was issued for Roma and the surrounding areas coming north from St George, we battened down the hatched and waited. Later that afternoon Sandy ventured forth and managed to get caught in the storm which lasted about five minutes, but he was very wet!
